  • BioPub Chemist JimT Muses on the Hydrophobic Effect
  • [Editor's note: hydrophilic and hydrophobic molecules have aversion to each other, but explaining why...indeed, explaining what it MEANS to be hydrophilic or hydrophobic, much less averse to your sibling is a complex subject that lends itself to brooding. As a going concern, life is pretty much a hydrophilic enterprise. Being aqueous is its stock in trade. But even scratch the surface of biology and you recognize that the hydrophobic effect, the natural tendency of hydrophobic molecules to hang together and draw a line they dare hydrophilic molecules to cross,is a driver of life itself. Indeed, life is inconceivable without the idea of a cell membrane, a wrapping for the cell that partitions its essential goop within by means of a hydrophobic barrier deep within the membrane. We think one understands biotech investing better if one understands biotech...and that one understands biotech the more biology and biological chemistry one knows. So we asked longtime reader JimT, a distinguished chemistry teacher at a highly regarded California academy, to have a go at explaining the hydrophobic effect. And we like where he's going with this......KSS] PHOBOS...GOD OF FATS AND OILS by Jim T The first known use of the term "phobia" came from Aulus Celsus (c. 25 BC – c. 50 AD) when he...

"The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. To be your own man is a hard business. If you try it, you'll be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself." - Kipling
